Lutz Heuser obtained a diploma in Informatics from the Technical University of Darmstadt and a doctoral degree in Informatics from the Technical University of Karlsruhe. He draws upon a diverse career and a rich expertise in the areas of business process modeling, collaborative business scenarios, business-to-business integration, real-time awareness, Internet of Things, smart items, ambient intelligence in business processes, RFID (radio frequency identification tags), sensor networks, Internet of Services, service oriented architecture (SOA), enterprise services and the business web. In addition to his career in business, Lutz Heuser has initiated and worked in several dedicated research initiatives on current trends in IT.

Lutz Heuser currently serves as Vice President of SAP Research and Chief Development Architect at SAP AG, where he is responsible for 350 people in 12 research centers on four continents, thereby supervising an executive management board for research of twelve vice presidents and directors. He is also responsible for the overall research portfolio management of SAP. Before joining SAP AG in 1999, Lutz Heuser helped launch the campus-based engineering center (CEC) Karlsruhe, which became the first of now eight CECs worldwide. It serves as an interface between academia and business world, developing trend-setting IT projects such as the lighthouse project THESEUS which has been launched in 2006 in cooperation with the German federal government and several business partners.

While co-founding and managing the CEC Karlsruhe, Lutz Heuser was a member of the extended executive board of the German branch of the infamous Digital Equipment Corporation, where he was responsible for research and project management for more than 10 years. Within his role at Digital he also directed the European program “Strategic Technology & Applied Research” that had developed out of the company’s European Applied Research Center, which he founded and served as director. Prior to this, Lutz Heuser helped establish the well-known Telecooperation Office (TecO) at the Technical University of Karlsruhe.

In 2004 Lutz Heuser has been awarded an Honorary Professorship from the Technical University of Darmstadt. He is also a Visiting Professor at the National University Paraguay, teaching collaborative business processes and mobile security, and an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. In 2008 Prof. Heuser has been awarded an Honorary PhD from the Technical University of Dresden. He has also given lectures on eLearning, ubiquitous computing and distributed systems at various universities in Germany. Lutz Heuser is the author of three books on Enterprise 2.0, the Internet of Things, the Internet of Services and user-driven innovation, and is currently working on a fourth called “A Scientific View of Tomorrow’s ICT World”. He has published more than two dozen research papers.

Lutz Heuser currently serves as chairman of ISTAG (Information Society Technology Advisory Group) which has been launched by the European Commission to advise them on a coherent ICT research policy. He is also a member of the Münchner Circle and the Feldafinger Circle, two non-profit supra-national bodies dedicated to communications & Internet research. Furthermore, he is a member of acatech, the German Academy for Science and Engineering.

Lutz Heuser belongs to the boards of trustees of three Fraunhofer Institutes and serves as a member of the advisory board of the International University in Germany (IUG) Bruchsal. Lutz Heuser helped initiate the International Research Forum, an exclusive think tank gathering a number of outstanding thought leaders from around the world. He regularly advises several CEOs and CTOs of medium-size businesses on strategic technology directions, market collaboration opportunities, most notably as a member of the advisory board of Seeburger AG. He is a highly demanded keynote speaker at major conferences and symposia all over the world.
